One thing our Oddfellows friendship group members love to do is get out in the fresh air - whatever the weather, writes Trudy Ford, social organiser for Derbyshire Peak Oddfellows.

We organise a Derbyshire-based walk every two weeks and, unless faced with torrential rain, we’ll wrap up and head out on an adventure!

If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, we’ve two options based on the level of challenge you’re looking for, or feel like.

Our ‘Rambling On’ walking group is perfect for those who prefer a more gentle pace. It meets on the first Friday of each month at 10.30am.

It’s a maximum 90-minute route on good paths, and we take it easy. Arthur, one of our members, leads it, so you don’t need to worry about having a map, you just follow the gang.

We explored Calver weir and riverside on our most recent meet-up.

On Friday, February 7, we will be meeting at Linacre Reservoirs for a walk, before enjoying lunch at the Olde House in Newbold.

However, if you fancy picking up the pace on a more challenging route, then we have a ‘Best Foot Forward’ walking group.

It meets on the third Friday of each month at different locations. Again, it’s member-led, so we have the pathways all planned out, but walks are generally two to three hours and ‘spirited’.

The group took on Teversal Trails on their last get-together.

Both walk options end with an optional (well-earned) pub lunch. The walk is free to attend, you just pay for what you want to eat or drink.

We also make sure that there’s parking available. We let people know where we’re heading to the week before, usually.

Our scheduled walking groups are great nudges to invite more nature into your life. You can come with someone, or on your own. Plus, if you don’t know the area well, or aren’t confident in reading maps, then that’s all taken care of.

They’re also a great backdrop for interesting conversations with fellow friendly walkers, too.

As well as our regular walking groups, Derbyshire Peak Oddfellows have lots of other activities on the go such as lunches, quizzes, talks and trips out.
