Officers join forces to promote security after spate of burglaries

Police volunteers and cadets joined forces in a bid to help Heanor residents give home security a boost.

The group took to the streets of Marpool to help the local Safer Neighbourhood policing team raise awareness about a number of burglaries in the area.

They delivered hundreds of letters and handed out crime prevention packs, which included security items such as alarms, timer switches and property marking pens, to help local people protect their property from thieves.

Since the start of January, there have been ten reports of burglaries in the area. The most recent took place between 9am and 2pm on Tuesday, February 9. A house on Breach Road was broken into and jewellery was stolen.

Temporary Sergeant Neil Hopwell said: “The visits form a valuable part of our wider operation to target these reports in the Marpool area. It was a great success for us as we managed to cover many homes that evening and speak to more residents than we would have been able to without the help of our police support volunteers and police cadets.

“I also had some positive feedback from some of the residents we spoke to who said it was great to see officers taking a proactive approach in helping them stay safe. Officers are also carrying out increased patrols, both in uniform and in plain clothes, to reassure residents and help prevent crime.”
