Offender is back behind bars just a day after being released from prison

Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Wednesday, May 24, how Jack Baldwin, 24, of no fixed abode, assaulted his mother and grandmother at his mother’s home on Ilkeston Road, at Heanor, where he had been invited following his release from prison.

Prosecuting solicitor Sarah Haslam said: “Jack Baldwin had been released from prison. His mother arranged for him to come to her address that evening to see the family.

“She was aware he had an appointment with the probation service to sort out his housing and he arrived early at 4pm and he was red in the face.”

Ms Haslam added that his mother quizzed Baldwin on whether he had been to the probation service to sort out his housing arrangements but he began swearing and was abusive to his mother and grandmother.

Baldwin went outside, according to Ms Haslam, and his mother locked the front door and he kicked and damaged the door and then he went to the back door which was not locked and as his mother and grandmother were trying to keep it closed he forced it open and they were injured.

Ms Haslam said: “The door was not locked at the back and he was pushing it and his mother and grandmother were trying to keep it shut and it flung open making contact with both women and it hit them.

“The grandmother was hit on the head and the mother’s hand was cut and they were in pain.”

The court heard how police attended the property and found Baldwin under the influence of alcohol or drugs and he was taken to the police station where he carved his initials into the hatch of his cell door.

Baldwin pleaded guilty to committing two assaults and to damaging a door after the incident on May 22 and he admitted damaging a police cell on May 23.

Defence solicitor Amie Godson said: “He’s dependent on alcohol and after a period in custody he turned straight back to alcohol and had a drink and was aware he should have gone to the probation service in relation to housing.

“He was too drunk and he thought if he turned up drunk they would report him.”

She added that when Baldwin’s mother started quizzing him about the probation service he became frustrated.

Magistrates sentenced Baldwin to six weeks of custody and ordered him to pay £100 compensation.
