No excuses to skip gym now- meet Chesterfield's 83-year-old gym regular Edna
An 83-year-old fitness fanatic is breaking stereotypes and proving there are 'no excuses' for Chesterfield's couch potatoes as she marks her eighth year of being a regular gym-goer.
Edna Thacker, from Inkersall, was initially “very nervous” when she approached the staff at Fitness in Time, but is now a familiar face at the Rose Hill gym where she works out three times a week.
The pensioner is hoping to spread the message to other residents who are eager to jump aboard the fitness wagon but feel their time has been and gone.
Edna, who worked at Kennings Garage before she retired, said: “Eight years agfo, after my husband Roy died, I became a bit lost for things to do.
“I noticed two ladies across the road from me were regulars at a gym in town and one day I plucked up the courage to ask if I could go with them sometime.I was very nervous at first but I quickly got the hang of it.
“I noticed Ithat was feeling fitter and that my mobility had improved. One thing I love about going to the gym is the company.
“It’s a ladies only gym and I’ve made some friends. Everyone is really friendly and I feel very looked after there.”
Edna now completes a 30 minute circuit incorporating cardio, resistance training and target exercises with ease.
“My favourite bit of equipment is probably the rowing machine,” she added. “I find it relaxing.”
Sharon Baggeley, manager Fitness In Time, said: “It’s so important no matter what age you are to keep fit and Edna has proved that you are never to old to exercise.
“We always make sure our programs are designed for each individual’s needs and abilities.
“I feel so proud of Edna- every time I see her she makes me smile.
“I hope people reading this will see what an inspirational lady she is and it gives them the confidence to try some form of exercise.”
