Newsreader opens school extension

A new multi-million-pound arts, IT and science block has been opened at Mill Hill School at Ripley by TV newsreader Moira Stuart.

BBC journalist Moira was joined by Derbyshire County Council chairman Joyce Sanders and cabinet member Alan Charles for the official opening of the 7.7m centre.

The block has been built thanks to a 1.5m grant from Derbyshire County Council and 6m governmental funding, with the rest being contributed by the school.

The extension includes eight science laboratories, seven technology rooms which include food and textiles, five art rooms, seven humanities class rooms and one media room.

Work at the school has also included the creation of a floodlit multi-use games area.

Cllr Charles said: “This new building will give students and staff the highest quality facilities for learning and teaching. Derbyshire County Council is proud to have been able to work with the government on this magnificent project.

“Providing up-to-date modern facilities like this helps pupils take pride in their school and their work.”
