Luca Morgan ran the Bupa junior two-kilometre fun run in Manchester with his younger brother Maxi and seven friends on Saturday to raise money for Ashgate Hospice, in Chesterfield.

The New Mills Primary School pupil lost his dad Dean to oesophageal cancer in March, after a three-month battle with the disease.

Mum Caroline said: “When we told Luca that Dean was going to die after he cried, he said: ‘I want to raise lots of money for Ashgate, mummy’ and so that’s what he’s doing. In just 24 hours he raised £620 on his Just Giving page!”

The 39-year-old, of White Road, added: “I am absolutely astounded by Luca’s resolve to raise money for Ashgate. He has shown such courage and strength at the hardest time. Bearing in mind his daddy was only diagnosed in December and what he went through was tough for the children to endure and see. I’m extremely proud of Luca and of all the other children that took part with him, as are all of the family. I am also overwhelmed by the support of friends, family and local businesses, who have sponsored them so generously. It has helped me to feel supported and shows what an incredible man Dean was that we have had so much support. As a family we are eternally grateful to Ashgate who gave Dean the best care we could have asked for at the end of his life. They gave the boys, myself and the family so much emotional support and care as well. This is the least we could do for them and there will be more. Dean was an amazing daddy and he and I were together 23 years as we met at just 15. He was loved by many in the area.”
