Music enthusiasts are hoping to bring a ‘mini Glastonbury’ to Chesterfield this summer.

Darren Garvey and three friends are in the middle of fine tuning plans for a one-day event called Rock Stock & Barrels, with everything from food stalls to the stage being locally sourced.

It will take place off Hundall Lane, Old Whittington, Chesterfield, on the last weekend in July or early August.

“It is going to be a mini one-day Glastonbury with eight local bands, food stalls and other entertainments,” Darren said.

“There is a lot of local musical talent in Chesterfield and this will be a great opportunity to showcase that.

“I don’t think there is anywhere else in Chesterfield that does a one-day music festival.”

Darren, an electrical contractor by day, who also plays in a band called The Shoals, is hoping the festival has enough spark to capture the imagination of the public so it can run every year.

He is helping to organise it alongside Lauren White, Geoff Fields and Matt Bradshaw.

The 37-year-old says the location has a ‘really nice feel to it’ and they are aiming to attract between 1,000 and 2,000 people. The festival will include a host of local bands and a main headline act.

There will also be a pizza oven, gourmet burgers, food stalls and a range of different beers.

“We want to put something back in the community.” Darren said. We are looking at it as a three-year plan to see how we get on.”

They are hoping to announce an official date for later in the summer in a couple of weeks and are very excited about the challenge ahead.

And with the final touches being made, Darren and the team are keeping their fingers crossed for suitable weather.

Darren who has been playing music since he was 11, told the Derbyshire Times: “I am not worried about anything apart from the weather. I am excited because it is a massive challenge - but I like a challenge. It is going to happen. Build it and they will come.”

He added: “Music has always been a passion of mine. There is a really good community about the bands that we have got. There are a lot of musicians in Chesterfield and the talent is there and I think people will really enjoy it.”
