Mum's plea after her three-month-old son almost dies of sepsis

Last Friday, Harry’s dad Nick rushed him to A&E after his breathing became laboured and he had gone ‘lifeless’.

Earlier that day a doctor has examined poorly Harry and had said he thought he would ‘sleep it off’ but mum Sophie Barker, 21, of North Wingfield, said she knew something was not right.

Four hours later Harry was ‘practically see through’, had gone blue and was not moving.

“My partner took him to Chesterfield Royal while I stayed home with my one-year-old who was in bed,” said Sophie.

“When he got there the nurses and doctor took one look at him and rushed him into resus and pumped him with oxygen.

“He was diagnosed with pneumonia, sepsis and all of his left lung was infected, so he was only working with one lung.

“If I’d have left it overnight he could have been dead.”

Sophie is currently travelling to the hospital every day as she waits for Harry to be allowed home.

She is now urging other parents to trust their ‘gut instincts’.

“If I hadn’t trusted mine, I could have lost my little boy.”

Harry was born at just 29 weeks - weighing 3lb 9oz.

Sophie now says she will be complaining about the care Harry received.

A spokesman for the Arden and Greater East Midlands Commissioning Support Unit said: “The CCG cannot comment on individual cases.”
