Helen, who is working alongside husband Jonni Bishop, said: “The Governement’s pledge to take 20,000 refugees over five years is deplorable.

“We should be doing a lot more to help refugees, who are fleeing unimaginably hideous conditions.

“These are not people coming here for economic reasons, they are fleeing for their lives and everybody could be doing a lot more to help them.

“We are generous people, and most people you speak to do actually want to do more to help refugees.”

She added: “I know people in the Amber Valley want to do more, but it isn’t always easy to find out how you can help.

“This is why people can get in touch with me and I will take it upon myself to make sure any donations are delivered.”

The petition Helen is urging people to sign has been released by national campaign group 38 Degrees.

Titled Refugees Welcomed in Amber Valley, the petition is one of hundreds that have been launched on the group’s website for towns, cities, and villages across the country.
