Miners' relatives urged to come forward for Derbyshire memorial

Relatives of miners who lost their lives in the Markham Colliery disasters are being urged to come forward so their loved ones can be honoured.

There are currently 19 life-size steel figures in place at Markham Vale as part of the Walking Together memorial to remember miners who died down the pit.

It will eventually feature 106 figures to represent each man who lost his life in three accidents at the site in 1937, 1938 and 1973.

Sandra Struggles, who is part of the Walking Together project, said: “I would like to make an appeal to anyone who had a relative killed in the disasters or to anyone with any information to help our research.

“Also, if anyone would wish to sponsor a figure it would be such an enormous help with the project. We are trying to get Heritage Lottery Funding.

“It is of vital importance that our mining heritage does not get forgotten when you thing of the dangerous jobs those men did for us.”

The Walking Together memorial has been designed by Cheshire-based Artist Stephen Broadbent.

It symbolises a miner’s journey to the pit and back home again.
