Men injured in M1 crash

MOTORISTS suffered long delays after a serious road traffic crash on the southbound carriageway of the M1 motorway between Chesterfield and Alfreton.

Two men were injured after the BMW car they were travelling in lost control and struck a tree before ending up on an embankment between Junction 29 and 28, of the motorway, about 4.45am, today, Friday, February 11.

A Derbyshire Constabulary spokesman said: “A black BMW 330 coupe left the carriageway and hit a tree and one of the two people involved are thought to have suffered serious injuries.”

Alfreton and Clay Cross firefighters assisted paramedics before the casualties were rushed to hospital by ambulance.

Police were forced to close a stretch of the M1 motorway before launching an investigation into the cause of the crash and helping to clear the wreckage from a precarious position.

A police spokesman added: “We worked with the Highways Agency to try and get the affected lanes of the motorway open as soon as possible.”

Witness are urged to call Derbyshire Constabulary on 0345 123 3333 or the force appeal line on (01773) 572929.
