Killamarsh Medical Practice has grown to cope with patient demand.
North East Derbyshire MP Natascha Engel officially opened a new surgery extension at the Sheffield Road facility on Friday.
The extension has taken six months to build and added another seven consultation rooms to the practice bringing the total to 14.
Dr Paul Cracknell, partner at Killamarsh Medical Practice, said: “With demand in primary care increasing year-on-year and more and more patient care transferring from hospital to the community, this new extension means we are more able to accommodate this shift in delivery.
“A large housing development is also planned for the old Westthorpe Colliery site in Killamarsh and so the extension has been built anticipating the demand that will bring.”
Labour politician Ms Engel added: “Like most areas of England, North East Derbyshire is seeing an increase in an aging population with complex care needs.
“Meeting the challenges this will bring will not be easy and so it is wonderful to see Killamarsh Medical Practice expand in order to allow more NHS staff such as district nurses, wellbeing workers, counsellors and pharmacists to work from the premises which means more services for patients in the area.”
Killamarsh Medical Practice was built in 1989 and serves the majority of residents living in the area.
