Matlock traders get together for retro party time

Traders in Smedley Street turned back the clock this week to throw a 1950s street party in a bid to showcase the fantastic businesses in the area.

After months of planning, the proactive bunch of traders pulled together for their first collaborative event.

Already being hailed as a “huge success”, crowds flocked to sample the range of businesses as well as enjoy the 1950s vibes.

Teresa Whittaker, who owns Bella Figura, said: “I don’t think the event could have gone any better. Everybody dressed up amazingly and we had a fabulous evening overall.

“There was a fantastic crowd of people who turned up for the party, many of which had never visited any of the businesses on Smedley Street – so great promotion for everybody up here.”

As part of the celebrations, all shops on the streets remained open late, discounts were available, 1950s-style bands rocked out, drinks and nibbles were lavished on attendees, and there was even a trail to follow around all the shops – which gave people the chance to be entered for a prize-draw.

McKenzies garage even had a display of 1950s cars for the crowds to admire.

Allsion Beesley, of The Nail Hut, said: “It truly was an incredible occasion.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to all the people who came and supported us. It seemed like everybody had a great time.

“We have a really great group of traders on Smedley Street, we are all reading off the same page and will definitely be arranging more events for the future – so keep an eye out.”
