Matlock Christmas markets hailed as ‘outstanding success’ by organisers

The event, which took place from Friday December 4 to Sunday December 6, saw record numbers of visitors from all over the country take advantage of the largely clear skies to peruse the stalls and enjoy the entertainment.

Located in beautiful Hall Leys Park, the event traced the town’s history from its Victorian beginnings right through to the present day and offered something for the whole family,

Chairman of the organising committee, Geoff Stevens, said: “It went very well and we were very lucky with the weather as well.

“It’s difficult to get an exact figure on numbers, but we reckon we had about 25,000 people there over the entire weekend.

“Over the years we have gone from three stalls in the carpark to around 200 stalls now in the park.

“It’s a beautiful setting with the castle looking down and there is always lots to do for all the family.”

Record business was reported not only at the markets, but also in the local shops, cafes and bars and local accommodation providers also recorded increased bookings with visitors coming from as far afield as Cornwall.

The crowds were treated to the traditional Christmas procession led by the Derby Midshipman Carnival Show Band complete with illuminated instruments and a carriage and horses which brought Santa to the bandstand in style.

Also lighting up the parade were illuminated models of Mickey Mouse’s Tug Boat, a battle scene from Star Wars and a scene from Thunderbirds, all from Matlock Bath illuminations.

And at the bandstand local 11-year-old singer Ellie Osbourne delighted the crowds by singing “Feed the Birds” from the popular musical “Mary Poppins,” accompanied by a Queen Victoria look alike.
