Martin Munro, 43, of Adlington Avenue, Wingerworth, launched the unprovoked assault on Chester Street.

Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard the pair – who had been together since November, 2014 – had gone out on the evening of March 11.

After a few drinks, they intended to go and play bingo at the town’s Mecca venue but an argument broke out because Munro realised he had left his wallet at home.

Jennifer Fitzgerald, prosecuting, said: “They went to a friend’s home on Chester Street where the victim says she was assaulted by the defendant.

“He pushed her and she stumbled to the ground in the roadway.

“She got up and he pushed her a second time but she remained on her feet.

“The defendant threw a couple of punches which she managed to avoid but she was then struck to the back of her head.

“It dazed her and made her fall to the floor.

“She suffered a lump to the back of her head.”

Munro also punched the windscreen of a Vauxhall Vectra parked on the road.

Ms Fitzgerald added: “The defendant says he has a drinking problem and has previously sought help.

“He says they had intended to go to bingo but couldn’t remember what then happened. For some reason, he saw red.

“He couldn’t remember attacking her but he did remember punching the car windscreen. He punched it because he intended to hurt himself as that’s what he does when he gets angry.

“He has expressed regret.”

Munro pleaded guilty to assault and criminal damage during last Wednesday’s hearing.

Magistrates sentenced Munro to a 12-month community order with 120 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay a £60 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
