Police and firefighters are investigating a bin blaze which spread to flats in Clay Cross where a man had to be rescued.
An emergency call was received shortly after 2am, on Thursday, May 17, to report a wheeled bin alight outside a maisonette in North Street.
A police spokesman said: “A man living in a flat at the affected block had moved to his balcony for safety and he was helped down by firefighters. He was uninjured.”
Derbyshire fire service revealed how the man had become trapped in the flat by fire and smoke and was advised to make his way to a safe area before he was helped to safety.
Clay Cross and Chesterfield firefighters armed with breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet extinguished the fire and made the area safe within an hour.
Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
