Man with Chesterfield links hunted after armed bank robbery

Detectives investigating the raid at Yorkshire Bank in Parkgate believe 44-year-old Paul Smith could hold vital information.

They charged Michael Lydon, 51, of Fair View Avenue, Cleethorpes, with robbery, attempted robbery, firearms offences and dangerous driving last week but now want to trace Mr Smith over the incident on Friday, January 29.

Two men armed with guns stormed the bank in Broad Street and threatened staff.

They escaped with cash and stole a car in nearby Industry Street as a woman in her 40s was getting into it - leaving her with serious injuries as they made their getaway.

Mr Smith has links to Chesterfield, police said.

He is 5ft 9in, of a stocky build and has short, cropped brown hair which is greying in parts.

Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Steve Ashmore, of South Yorkshire Police, said: "We have already charged Lydon and arrested and bailed five people in connection with this incident but we believe that Mr Smith could hold vital information.

"If you know where he is or have information that may assist our investigation, we urge you to contact police.

"If you see Mr Smith, do not approach him but call South Yorkshire Police on 101. In an emergency, always call 999."
