Officers from the Wirksworth and Middleton Safer Neighbourhood Team carried out speed and road safety checks in Wirksworth last Wednesday to remind motorists about the importance of safe and considerate driving.

During the day, 15 people were found to be driving over the speed limit and one motorist was spoken to by officers after he was stopped for using a mobile phone behind the wheel.

A 22-year-old man was arrested and later cautioned after officers found him to be in possession of a small amount of a suspected Class B drug. Officers had stopped the vehicle for traffic offences and were later handed the suspected drugs by the driver after questioning from the team.

PC Dan Mitchell from the safer neighbourhood team said: “Although most drivers abided by the limit, it was a concern to see that 15 motorists were exceeding the speed limit on the roads.

“Speed limits are there for a reason, to keep motorists, cyclists and pedestrians safe. We will continue to carry out speed checks in the future and I would like to urge drivers to slow down, watch their speed and remain vigilant on the roads.”
