A-level results: A* champions at Matlock school

The overall results have been amazing with a record number of sixth-formers being accepted for university places today.

And Highfields School in Matlock was no exception as the class of ‘15 maintained an amazing 59 per cent of high grades and 81 per cent hitting A*-C.

We went along to the school to speak to some high achievers who hit top marks and are about to move across the country to continue their education at university.

Michael Beech was thrilled when he achieved four A* grades today in maths, further maths, physics and geology.

He said modestly: “I*’m quite happy with that yeah. I was so nervous though, I didn’t get much sleep last night but it’s turned out okay.

Going straight to Bath to study mechanical engineering, the 18-year-old has been putting in the extra hours as well as keeping busy with extra curricular activities, and been completing his Duke of Edinburgh award.

He added: “I’ve said goodbye to some friends today - Bath is a really long way away.

Mum Diane Beech, a teaching assistant at All Saints Junior School said: “I am incredibly proud of Michael, he’s worked really hard and deserves every bit of it.”

Matthew Maltby has dazzled with his four A*s and will be accepting his place to Cambridge to read physical sciences.

He added: “I’m well chuffed - and relieved. I’m not very good at coming out of exams so I was a bit nervous.

“It’s been tough but not unreasonable. It was quite emotional to say goodbye to people I probably won’t see for a long time.”

With an overall 99 per cent pass rate, the results mean that the vast majority of Highfields students will be able to follow their planned route, said the school.

Head of sixth form, Martin Flett is delighted with the results.

he said: “Once again this year our sixth form students have produced excellent outcomes. I am really proud of how hard these youngsters have worked. Their commitment, drive and enthusiasm have made them a great group of youngsters to work with. Beyond their academic achievements they are happy and well-rounded individuals who have made some great contributions to our community.’

Assistant head of sixth form, Dave Turner said: “For year thirteen these achievements represent seven years of hard work. Their examination results are outstanding, but as a group they have contributed so much on so many fronts such as performing arts, sport, Duke of Edinburgh award and mentoring younger pupils. We are very proud of all their achievements and wish them every success in the future.”
