LETTER: Smog of smoke at hospital caused asthma attack

I have to regularly attend Chesterfield Royal Hospital due to very bad asthma.

The whole hospital and grounds are designated no smoking, and yet there are always lots of people sitting under the canopy to the main entrance who are openly smoking.

On my last visit (earlier this week), the smoke was so bad, I suffered a very bad asthma attack — at the place I was attending in order to treat the problem.

This attack was caused entirely by the huge smog of cigarette smoke through which every visitor to the hospital has to pass.

I reported the issue to the hospital security department and was told that they are powerless to enforce the no smoking rules. How can this be?
