LETTER: Ashfield District Council works hard to tackle litter
As portfolio holder responsible for environment at Ashfield District Council, I wanted to respond to Alex Thomson's letter in last week's Chad , Back my bid for litter clean-up campaign.
I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments and share your passion for helping to make Ashfield and the surrounding area more attractive places.
As a council, our environmental services team works hard to keep the district free from litter, as well as ensuring we provide excellent parks, beautiful flowering displays and attractive town centres.
We already support a number of community litter picks within the area; providing safety equipment, litter pickers and gloves and also collect any rubbish people collect. We’ve also recently supported the Clean for the Queen initiative, working with 13 community litter picks in the area.
We do, however, want to do more, and have formalised this commitment as part of our Even Cleaner Street campaign. We also recognise to make a difference we cannot do it alone and need the support of our communities to make the kind of impact we all want to see. We are in the process of recruiting environmental volunteers and are looking at how we can put more resources into developing this kind of community-led approach. We would certainly be keen to work with you and any other interested individuals or groups in developing this approach.
I look forward to seeing what we might be able to achieve together.
