Last respects to be paid to war hero

The funeral arrangements of Killamarsh war hero Corporal Liam Riley have been confirmed.

A full military service will take place at Sheffield Cathedral on Wednesday, February 24, at 11am.

The service will be followed by a private family interment at Killamarsh Cemetery.

Following the service, the cortege - expected to include five coach loads of friends and army colleagues - will make its way through Beighton and Sothall where Corporal Riley grew up until the age of 14 when his family moved to Killamarsh.

It is expected to arrive in Beighton at around 12.15pm when local people can pay their respects.

The cortege is expected to reach Bridge Street in Killamarsh at approximately 12.30pm.

Friends and family of the 21-year-old former Westfield School pupil will then gather in the Crown Inn, Killamarsh where Corp Riley held a farewell party before his posting to Afghanistan.

A member of the 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment lost his life in Heldman Province when he stepped on a roadside bomb as he tried to save the life of his army pal Lance Corp Graham Shaw who had stood on a similar device just moments before.

His mum Cheryl, dad Michael, brother Jonjo and sister Olivia have requested family flowers only, with donations in Corp Riley's memory to the Help For Heroes Charity.
