Last bid to save the Wirksworth parade

A dedicated group of Wirksworth residents are pulling together in a final bid to save the town’s parade.

Following the recent demise of Wirksworth Carnival, a new committee has been elected and plans are firmly in place for the Wirksworth Parade 2013.

The parade will be held over the usual carnival weekend – on May 25, 26, 27 – and organisers are hopeful that, despite the short time frame, the event will be a success.

Sally Smart, chair of the new committee, said: “We might be short of funds, and time, but we believe we can pull this off and give all the children, families and residents of Wirksworth an event.

“This year will be as much about laying the foundations and raising funds for next year, though, as it is about keeping the tradition going.”

However, to give the parade a fighting chance of success, the committee is making a desperate plea for help.

Saskia North, committee secretary, said: “We are urging Wirksworth businesses to set up stalls on the Saturday. And any local musicians, drama groups, dance groups, people qualified in first aid or anybody that can help in any way are all urged to get in touch.”

The committee is also appealing to Derbyshire businesses to sponsor the event.
