Joy as Marehay play area gets £57k facelift

Marehay Recreation Ground is set to undergo a facelift thanks to a £57,000 funding boost.

The facility will benefit from better play equipment, a re-levelling of the football pitch, a new footpath and benches and plants.

The upgrade – which has been in the pipeline for three years – is possible thanks to cash from the Biffa Award Landfill Communities Fund.

A partnership consisting of the Marehay Community Trust (MCT), Amber Valley Borough Council and environmental regeneration charity Groundwork is leading the project.

The revamp has been designed by Groundwork. Work the on site is ealready underway and is due to be completed by summer of this year.

Councillor Lyndsay Cox, who represents Marehay, said: “I recognise the importance of supporting and promoting physical activity, particularly in children, as this can have lasting effects in terms of health and wellbeing.

“Play also contributes to the development of a child and therefore I warmly welcome the improvements which will take place.”

Chris Ward, chair of the MCT, said he was delighted with the significant funding from the Biffa Award Landfill Communities Fund.

“This is a project which the trust, together with its key partners at the borough council and Groundwork, have been working on for nearly three years and to see it come to fruition will be simply fabulous,” he added.

Cllr John McCabe, the borough council’s cabinet member for the environment, said he was “extremely pleased” with the news.
