Job scheme is big success

A PIONEERING scheme devoted to getting the long term unemployed into work is celebrating after it was found to be outperforming similar schemes across the country.

The Chesterfield Law Centre’s Moving Beyond Volunteers Project, which helps people from coalfield communities, has been praised after achieving a success rate of getting 60 per cent of participants into work, compared to 12 per cent in other Pathways to Work schemes.

“By providing a safe environment for the long term unemployed to ease back into work, and by building their confidence and helping them get relevant skills, this project has made an impressive difference to individuals,” said Peter McNestry, trustee of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, which funds the scheme.

The independent report by Red Gem Consulting described the success as “astonishing”, as it has so far helped 23 local people.
