It’s a wrap! Derbyshire schools win film gongs

Budding young movie makers lit up an awards ceremony to recognise their film making skills.

The ‘DAFTA’ awards, hosted by Derbyshire County Council, are now in their fourth year and schools, youth groups and other organisations were all invited to enter.

They are designed to get young people involved in film production to help them develop their skills.

More than 60 films were submitted for judging by a panel including professionals from the film industry and the county council’s school advisory service.

Actors playing a racing car driver and ‘The Stig’ from motor show Top Gear were guest presenters on Thursday night (June 30) at The Hayes Conference Centre, Swanwick.

The ushers were pupils from Brampton Primary School and Grassmoor Primary School in Chesterfield.

Also in attendance was Councillor Chris Jackson, Derbyshire County Council’s vice-chairman.

He said: “Young people from all across Derbyshire have worked really hard to produce some impressive and entertaining films.

“Making films is a great way for young people to develop their creativity, to learn to solve problems and work as a team as well as build up self confidence.”

There were 12 categories in total, with the award for best film going to Speedwell Infants for its film ‘Say No! to Bullies’.

The award for Outstanding Achievement went to Brookfield Community School for their film ‘5 More Minutes’.
