Investigation into Buxton Opera House theft

Police have launched an investigation into the theft of money from Buxton Opera House over a period of 14 months.

It is alleged that the funds were stolen from a bank account between April 2012 and June 2013, when staff at the opera house reported the incident to police.

Auditors are determining the amount that is missing.

A Derbyshire Police spokesman confirmed that a 45-year-old man from Cheshire has been arrested on suspicion of theft, questioned and released on bail while inquiries continue.

Clive Beattie, chairman of the High Peak Theatre Trust, said: “The theatre is a charity and we are extremely disappointed that this has happened. We are working with the police as part of a full investigation.”

He added: “I would like to reassure our audiences and supporters that although this is difficult for us, the opera house will continue to function normally and no performances will be affected by this.”
