Here’s a look back in pictures at the construction of Matlock’s state-of-the-art leisure centre.
Arc Leisure Centre marks its fifth anniversary next weekend with a special celebration.
The £12m centre - the biggest single development undertaken by Derbyshire Dales District Council - opened its doors to the public for the first time on Wednesday August 24, 2011.
Built on a reclaimed site between Matlock and Darley Dale, it replaced Matlock Lido which had served the community for over 70 years.
Alongside the eight-lane main pool which meets regional competition standards, the Arc boasts a learner pool, wet play area, two sports halls, a fitness suite, community facilities and a cafe.
Olympics figurehead Lord Sebastian Coe, who officially opened the centre two months later, said at the time: “With just 280 days to go until the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games it is a privilege to formally open such an impressive leisure centre for the Derbyshire Dales.”
To celebrate its fifth anniversary, Arc Leisure Matlock will host an open day on Saturday August 20.
Admission will be £1 only for entry into participating activities which will include: swimming, pool inflatables, sample fitness classes, local club activities, fun fitness challenges, plus activities for kids including a bouncy castle, soft play area, fete stalls, golf and Matlock Fire Station’s fire truck.
Entrance proceeds taken on the day will go to Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre.
The Arc will also be promoting a series of special offers. For more on these, visit www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/things-to-do/leisure-centres/promotions-and-special-offers.
