PCSO Hayley Grundy, of the Chesterfield Town Centre Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "The shops are much busier at this time of year and, while it is understandably easy to get distracted, we don't want people to be targeted by a thief.

"It is really important to always keep your purse and mobile phone safe inside your handbag and that your bag is securely closed.

"Keep your handbag close to you, ideally under an arm with the strap over your shoulder, and avoid carrying large quantities of cash.

"You also might want to consider fitting a chain to your purse to help prevent it from being removed from your bag."

In addition, shoppers are urged to be vigilant around cash machines and tills by making sure nobody is standing too close or looking over their shoulder.
