A COMMUNITY have rallied together to save an historic church from closure.
Last week, the Derbyshire Times revealed that St Bartholomews Church, in Old Whittington, needs repairs to a leaking roof, at a cost of about £40,000, or it could face closure.
Since then, readers and members of the community have expressed concern over the future of the church, which is almost 1,000 years old.
One reader, Brenda Raybould, said:
“I am particularly fond of this church, my husband and I were married here, our son was baptised here too.
“Growing up, my husband was in the church choir as a junior then senior member. I would hate to think it would have to be closed.”
A public meeting has been arranged for tomorrow, November 25, starting at 6.30pm, at the Swanwick Memorial Hall, High Street, Old Whittington, to bring the issue to the wider community.
A trust fund has been set up for people to make donations. If anyone wants to donate, they can send cheques to Rev Julia Babb, 84 Church Street North, Old Whittington, Chesterfield, S41 9QP.
Cheques should be made payable to St.Bartholomews (Roof Fund).
