The couple - who are both from Chesterfield - married in 1957 at Storrs Road Methodist Church while Dennis was in the middle of his National Service.

Dennis worked at the Derbyshire Times as a compositor for 36 years while Margaret worked for many years in the fashion trade.

The couple have two daughters - Karen and Lisa - three grandsons and one granddaughter.

Asked what their secret to a happy marriage was, Margaret said they just ‘get on well together’.

I suppose it was just meant to be.

“We have always been together since the day we met,” she said.

During their 60 years together, the couple have enjoyed taking holidays and travelling - and now have a caravan at Whitby. They say they received hundreds of cards from well-wishers including one - which was delivered by hand - from the Queen.

Dennis said the pair first met - only fleetingly - when he was out on his motorbike.

They then saw each other again at a dance at the Victoria Ballroom and the rest is history.

“We have always been happy together and looked out for each other,” said Dennis.
