Hearty challenge for partner

A Matlock man is taking on a challenge for the British Heart Foundation because his partner is on the waiting list for heart valve replacement surgery.

Carl Palferyman, 33, is calling on Derbyshire outdoor enthusiasts to lace up their walking boots and take part in the BHF’s popular High Peak Winter Hike this weekend.

Carl’s partner Emily Whittle (27) was found to have a heart murmur at birth, which led to being diagnosed with two holes in her heart and mitral valve regurgitation. After surgery to repair her leaking mitral valve at age seven it has now become necessary to have her mitral valve replaced due to a gradual down turn in Emily’s health over the last 18 months. She has been on the waiting list since May 2012.

Carl said: “It is hard waiting for Emily’s valve replacement. She has been through so much, but life should be much better after the operation”.

“I want to support the BHF because of the amazing work they do, and the support the BHF team at Glenfield Hospital have given us during this difficult time. I’m really looking forward to taking part in the High Peak Winter Hike. I hope others decide to take part too. Raising funds to support the charity’s vital work is so important to enable them to continue the fight against heart disease.”

Places are still available for the 17 mile trek along the famous trail in the Peak District on Sunday 18 November.

Passing through some of Derbyshire’s finest countryside and industrial heritage, the Trail follows the route of the former Cromford and High Peak Railway, which offers views of the Derbyshire countryside, including the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site.
