Have you seen Alan the dancing lollipop man bust his Elvis moves in Old Whittington?

Elvis fan Alan Filbee helps children across the road to Mary Swanwick Community Primary School on High Street in Old Whittington twice a day.

The dedicated 47-year-old, who has become a bit of a local celebrity over the years, dances on the spot at the side of the road and is even known to burst into song.

“It all started one day when I was really cold and I just started moving to keep warm,” Alan said.

“My main inspiration is Elvis because I listened to him from a young age.”

Dad-of-one Alan was born in High Wycombe and moved to Chesterfield in 1999.

His daughter Chloe used to go to Staveley Junior School and it was then that he became aware of a job vacancy.

Alan initially started working as a crossing patrol at a number of different schools before settling on High Street, where he has been positioned for six years now.

“I love my job,” Alan said.

“To see the expression on the children’s faces as they cross the road safely is fantastic.

“I treat the children as if they were my own and make sure they get to school safely.”

His loveable personality is a great hit with the children and their parents and passing motorists on their way to work who regularly show their appreciation by waving and pipping their horns.

“Chesterfield is such a nice place to live and everyone is so welcoming,” Alan told the Derbyshire Times.

Alan, of Gypsy Lane, Old Whittington, also works in Iceland in Chesterfield and even gets recognised while he is on the tills or filling the freezers.

When asked how long he would continue dancing for, Alan added: “For as long as possible - fingers crossed.”
