Gritters take to Derbyshire roads ahead of start of big freeze

Gritters have been out and about across Derbyshire this afternoon ahead of the start of the big freeze of 2014.

With temperates set to plunge below zero overnight, all primary routes in the county have been treated by Derbyshire County Council (DCC) highways workers.

The Met Office said it will be cold and frosty tomorrow morning.

DCC has just taken delivery of 15 new gritter lorries to replace 15 old ones.

The authority has about 24,000 tonnes of grit in stock and gets grit deliveries daily as and when it is needed.

It costs £15,000 to grit the county’s primary and secondary routes.
