'˜Godmother' of Bakewell's legacy for local children

The next generation of readers at Bakewell Infant School are getting the bounty of books in memory of Carole Newbould, who passed away in August aged 61.

Carole, who ‘loved books’, had lived in Bakewell her entire life and had worked in the town’s library for 30 years.

In the wake of her unexpected passing, more than £4,000 has been donated and her family has received hundreds of tributes to the ‘Godmother of Bakewell’.

Daughter Laura said: “It was heartbreaking to lose mum so suddenly. But we are touched at how much has been donated in her memory and so proud that she will continue to help children learn to read.

“Aside from her family and friends, the things mum cared most about was books, Bakewell and being part of the town she loved.”

She added: “It’s great for the family to know how loved she was. We’ve had hundreds of cards, many saying ‘Bakewell has lost its Godmother’.”

Carole, who was a governor at the school, leaves behind husband Peter, children Adam and Laura and granddaughter Rosie, aged four, who will be one of the children to benefit from the donation, and grandson Charlie, three.

Tricia Outram, headteacher at Bakewell Infant School, said: “We have never received such a large donation to buy books with and we are so grateful to Carole. This money will help inspire Bakewell’s infants to read for years to come.”

She added: “Carole was passionate about reading. She did so much good work at the school over the years and it’s wonderful that her positive influence will continue.”
