Glossop garden on track for award

The embankment garden at Glossop station and the ceramic display at Dinting station have been shortlisted for awards by the Association of Community Rail Partnerships.

The former, a long green area packed with primulas, rhododendrons and perennial shrubs, was nominated in the best station garden category and was created three years ago by Friends of Glossop Station.

Chairman Neil Williams said: “We’re absolutely delighted. Because you have to cross the railway to access the garden, Network Rail only permit our five gardeners to work on it once a month between 6am and 9am when there are no trains running. So they’re very dedicated and it’s nice they’ve been recognised. The garden has always received a lot of attention from local travellers and visitors.”

While Dinting in Ceramics, which was installed as part of High Peak Community Arts’ project eARTh, has been shortlisted in the community art scheme category. The five mosaics were created by a team of 24 adults with mental health problems, led by artist Alison Bowry.

Winners will be revealed on October 2.
