Gladys, a resident at Chesterfield’s Chatsworth Lodge Care Home, celebrated the landmark birthday last Thursday. Originally from Leicestershire, Gladys married her late husband Walter in 1938.

Gladys’ daughter Joyce said that her mum and dad made their own wine and grew their own vegetables.

“I always tell her that she is now reaping the benefits of a healthy life,” Joyce said.

Gladys lived independently until January last year when she moved to the care home.

On her birthday she was surrounded by her family and two old friends who came up to see her and reminisce about past times.

“It was amazing what she could remember,” Joyce added.

Gladys received a cake from the care home and a card from the Queen.

She has two daughters, two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
