Funding extended as folk celebrate

DERBYSHIRE Dales District Council funding helped around 120 local communities celebrate the Diamond Jubilee and Olympics in style.

From picnics, street parties and flower festivals to treasure hunts, beacons and bonfires, community groups flew the flag after the authority set aside £12,000 to help local people stage events, organise entertainment, buy equipment and provide commemorative items.

Community groups, town and parish councils and registered charities claimed grants of between £50 and £200 after the council created the funding by combining existing community and play development grants already budgeted for this year. And demand was so great that the authority increased the original funding pot by £2,000.

Cllr Carol Walker, chairman of the communities committee, said: “It was a joy to be part of the Jubilee and Olympic Torch relay celebrations in the Dales and it’s great news that Derbyshire Dales District Council’s fund went a long way to create a real feel-good factor in our towns and villages.”
