Fruity Friday raises cash for cancer charity

An infant school near Chesterfield has raised more than £2,000 for cancer prevention charity World Cancer Research Fund by organising a series of fruit-related events.

Children at Brimington Manor Infant and Nursery School first took part in a sponsored skip – family, friends and neighbours donated money for every jump the child completed in two minutes.

The following day at school was designated ‘Fruity Friday’, with all the children asked to dress in fruity colours or in fruit-themed fancy dress. The children also learnt about the benefits of healthy eating and tasted different types of fruit.

In total, an incredible £2,080 has been raised so far with more money still to come in. It is by far the biggest amount raised since the school first began organising a ‘Fruity Friday’ for World Cancer Research Fund eight years ago.

Headteacher Kathryn Fretwell said: “We’ve been bowled over by the money that is coming in, and we’d like to congratulate all the children who took part. They should all be so proud of themselves.

Parents and children have always been generous here, but this year we decided to do even more to raise money for this worthwhile cause. Our decision certainly paid off!”
