Fresh hope for starving Emma

An anorexic woman who has tried to kill herself nine times has been discharged from hospital amid fresh hope of specialist treatment.

Emma Duffy, 24, who also battles borderline personality disorder could be accepted for treatment at The Retreat in York, after doctors agreed to reapply for funding.

The hospital is one of the only centres in the UK to treat both illnesses together.

Mum, Beverley Duffy, of Walton said the former Parkside pupil has been ‘in good spirits’ since the application was resubmitted.

A girl became anorexic and hasn't eaten in over a year after she heard a teacher calling students FAT - when she was just EIGHT.
Emma Duffy, 24, is so gripped by anorexia she relies on liquid nutrition to survive and has tried to kill herself NINE times - even resorting to swallowing razor blades.
The former student from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, has been repeatedly sectioned under the mental health act and has also cut her legs and poured boiling water over her arms.

She said: “It could be a good outcome. Emma is keeping positive, she is going out with her friendsand keeping herself busy.

“She still isn’t eating but it is just one step at a time.”

A spokesperson for The Retreat said he couldn’t comment on individuals, but it would be dealt with through the referall system.

Emma’s family launchedthe Saving Emma campaign last month in a bid to raise the moneyfor private treatment at The Retreat – around £156,000 a year.
