Fire breaks out in Chesterfield town centre

Firefighters are tackling a blaze in Chesterfield town centre.

Crews were called to Low Pavement shortly before 11am today amid reports of a fire in Ladbrokes.

A Derbyshire fire service spokesman said a blaze broke out in the roof space of the property.

The Pavements Shopping Centre has been evacuated and is not currently open to members of the public.

Workers and shoppers gathered outside the centre.

One man, who did not want to be named, said: "We were shopping inside one minute then ordered outside the next.

"It was all quite dramatic."

Firefighters from Chesterfield, Staveley and Clay Cross are in control of the incident and remain at the scene.

It is not yet clear what caused the fire.

There is no immediate word on any injuries.
