Readers can expect fantasy, thrills and history from a new book based around a Derbyshire town.

Barry, a former archaeologist who is a member of Derbyshire County Council, based the book around Pentrich and Ripley.

“Pentrich is an old Welsh place name meaning ‘hill of the boar’,” he explained.

“There is quite a strong theme of history in the book due to my backround, but it also has fantasy and horror.”

St Matthew’s Church, in Pentrich, is one of the focal points of the story, as the lead character, maverick detective called Bill Clements, discovers a portal to another world beneath it. What follows is a battle between good and evil.

Barry, who also co–owns Amber Valley Wines, has previously written non fiction, including ‘Hunting in Britain from the Ice Age to the present’, but he has wanted to expend into fiction for some time.

“I started the book in 1999, so I’ve been going at it for a few years now,” Barry said.

“In the last couple of years I thought ‘I must get this done’.

“Fiction is what I love.”

Barry has taken inspiration from authors such as Stephen King and JK Rowling, he also enjoys James Joyce.

‘The Hill of the Boar’ is the first installment in a series of books called ‘The Seven Seals’.
