Fearless 4x4 drivers hit the road to help the public

Despite the bad weather bringing roads to a snowy standstill, a group of fearless 4x4 drivers have been using their vehicles to get vital health workers to the patients that need them.

Peak 4x4 Response is a network of volunteers – with well maintained and well equipped four wheel drive vehicles – who provide “go anywhere” transport when normal methods are stretched to the limit.

Volunteer Geoff Williams, of Stanton-in-Peak, explained: “Everybody receives a list of vital staff who need to get to work and it’s up to the individual driver to choose the jobs they want.”

In the recent weather Geoff has taken care workers all over the Peak District to visit patients in need of treatment. He even took the District Nurse on a five-hour trip around the Dales in his trusty Land Rover.

“The 4x4 community get such a bad press at times but people don’t always know that, at times like this, we provide a vital service to the public,” said Geoff.

“To be honest, we all love volunteering for Peak 4x4 Response as it gives us an opportunity to help people – and an excuse to get out in the snow.”
