Family’s shock at death of Wirksworth boy, 15

Joseph ‘Joe’ Southam was found in a critical condition at his home in Canterbury Terrace, Wirksworth, last Thursday morning.

He was rushed to Royal Derby Hospital, but sadly died later that day.

His mother Barbara Southam said: “At the moment we don’t know the exact cause of his death. We are all very shocked.”

David Baker, head teacher of Anthony Gell School, in Wirksworth, which Joe attended, released the following statement: “The whole Anthony Gell School community is devastated to hear of the death of one of our students Joe Southam who was about to start Year 11.

“Joe was an outstandingly talented student who had a great deal of potential and I am sure had a very bright future ahead of him.”

He said that Joe had been particularly interested in science, having recently returned from a school trip to the Russian Space Centre, near Moscow.

“He had clearly loved his time there and it had inspired him in his study of Physics,” Mr Baker added.

“Joe had taken three GCSEs a year early this summer and was predicted to gain top grades.

“Everyone’s thoughts are with his family and friends at this incredibly sad and difficult time.

“Joe’s sister also attended the school and we know the family well.

“We will provide all the support we can and will be remembering Joe when the new term begins in September.”

The police are not treating the death as suspicious.

A post–mortem examination has been carried out, the details of which are yet to be released.
