Experts sound 16-hour snow alert for Derbyshire

The Met Office has released a yellow ‘be aware’ alert for snow in the county between 5pm on Wednesday and 9am on Thursday.

A Met Office spokesman said up to six centimetres of snow may fall ‘in a number of areas’ with possibly as much as ten centimetres locally – mainly above elevations of 300 metres.

The spokesman added: “Please be aware of the risk of disruption to travel and take appropriate precautions before undertaking journeys.”

A Derbyshire County Council spokesman said its team of gritters will treat primary routes in the Peak District from 4pm then all of the area’s primary routes from 9pm.

The country is currently in the grip of a cold spell after weeks of mild weather.

The council spokesman added: “It will also be worth keeping fully up-to-date with the latest forecasts – details of amounts and areas affected may well change.”
