A statement on the council's website said: “Can you please ensure you only flush toilet paper down your toilet and not baby wipes or kitchen roll.

“This is the disgusting mess our drainage operatives have to deal with. A situation that can so easily be avoided.

“We advise wipes to be placed in the black bin unless you are self-isolating or showing any Covid-19 symptoms then the wipes should be double bagged and only placed out for collection when a minimum of 72 hours has passed.

“If the bin collection is sooner than this the bag should be safely stored until the next collection day.”

Severn Trent said it has dealt with 3,000 sewer flooding and blockages in the past fortnight, and has been “much busier than normal”

Grant Mitchell from Severn Trent said: “We know some people are having to resort to using a whole manner of things to substitute for toilet roll at the moment, but a sewer blockage is the last thing anyone needs.”
