Chesterfield Borough Council said as the car park was privately run they had no powers to move the travellers on, but were monitoring the situation.

A spokesman said an environmental health team had visited the site on Thursday and found it to be 'tidy'.

Brian Parker, a director at Britannia Car Parks confirmed the group left the scene on Sunday.

He added: "I can confirm that a small number of travellers arrived at the car park on Wednesday June 1 and left the site in Sunday June 5. During this time the car park remained open to the public while we liaised with the travellers and local police. The car park is fully open for use by members of the public.

"It hasn't caused a huge inconvenience - we've had to clear up a few rubbish bags but nothing I'd be overly concerned about. There was small disruption to customers but this was minimal because it was half term."
