Ella Nichols, who is just five, ran the Derby 3k run with her mum Andrea.

The youngster, from Alfreton, took part in the race to raise the cash for Diabetes UK, after her father, Robert, was diagnosed with the condition five years ago.

Andrea, 37, said: “We are so proud of Ella.

“She ran the race in just over half-an-hour and wasn’t even out of breath, which wasn’t the same for me.

“We wanted to do something for Diabetes UK, which has helped us as a family to learn to live with diabetes coming into our lives.

“It is something that affects the whole family and Ella wanted to do something for her dad.

“Robert picks up lots of helpful hints and tips from the charity to help manage the condition, particularly from their Twitter account.”

The £400 raised by Ella will help Diabetes UK continue to care, campaign and connect with the 3.8 million people in the UK with diabetes.

Robert, was diagnosed at 29 with diabetes. He experienced common symptoms which came on quickly, including being very tired and extremely thirsty.

After a visit to his doctor he was immediately admitted to hospital where he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

People with Type 1 cannot produce insulin. About 10 per cent of people with diabetes have Type 1.

No-one knows exactly what causes it, but it’s not to do with being overweight and it isn’t currently preventable. Robert has daily injections of insulin.
