Elderly woman dies after house fire

POLICE have confirmed that a 69 year-old woman who was rescued from a house fire by two officers has since died.

The fire was discovered on Castleton Road, Hope, about 11.30am, on Sunday, January 8, by police on patrol.

A police spokesman said: “Two officers rescued the sole female occupant - a 69 year-old woman - and administered first aid and she was taken to hospital.”

Police said the woman was in a critical condition and confirmed this morning. Monday, January 9, that she later died.

Hathersage, Bradwell and Chapel-en-le-Frith firefighters attended the incident and Derbyshire fire service said the blaze is believed to have been caused by smoking materials.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched by Derbyshire Constabulary and Derbyshire fire service but police said the incident is not believed to be suspicious.
