Driver 'mounted grass verge for unknown reason' before crashing into bridge, inquest hears

A Derbyshire man who tragically died in a road accident this week mounted a grass verge 'for an unknown reason' before crashing into a bridge, an inquest today heard.

Martin Coverley, 48, of Raven Avenue, Tibshelf, died at about 6.45am on Huthwaite Road, Blackwell, on Monday, April 11.

Investigations are still being carried out.

Speaking at the inquest at Chesterfield Coroner’s Court today (April 15), Police Constable Nicholas Bentley of Derbyshire Constabulary Collision Investigation Unit, said: “At around 6.45am on Monday 11th April, a blue Ford Fiesta was driving along Huthwaite Road at Blackwell in the direction of Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire.

“The vehicle, for an unknown reason, mounted the grass verge on the near side and the vehicle has struck a concrete bridge.

“No other vehicles were involved that we know of. The only occupant was the driver.

“At this time we have no witnesses to the collision, however people did come across it very shortly after it occurred.”

Formal identification took place on Monday afternoon at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

A post-mortem has taken place and the results are pending.

Assistant Coroner for Derbyshire, James Newman, adjourned the inquest for a further hearing on October 4 2016.
